Chapter 6- Equilibria Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium?
When the rate of the forward and reverse reaction are the same.
This means the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant.
What conditions are required for an equilibrium mixture?
Equilibrium occurs in a closed system
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle?
If you subject a system at equilibrium to a change, the position of equilibrium will move to counteract the change
How does change in temperature change the position of equilibrium?
If temp. increases, equilibrium moves to decrease temperature so in the endothermic direction.
If temp. decreases, equilibrium moves to increase temperature so in the exothermic direction.
How does change in concentration change the position of equilibrium?
If [reactant] increases, equilibrium moves to decrease [reactant] so shifts to the right, producing more products.
If [product] increases, equilibrium moves to decrease [product] so shifts to the left, producing more reactants.
+vice versa
How does change in pressure change the position of equilibrium?
If pressure increased, equilibrium moves to decrease pressure so moves to the side with least moles of gas.
If pressure decreased, equilibrium moves to increase pressure so moves to the side with most moles of gas.
How does a catalyst change the position of equilibrium?
Has no effect upon position of equilibrium as it speeds up both the forward and reverse reactions equally.
Increases speed at which equilibrium is reached.
What is a homogeneous system?
A system where all chemicals are in the same phase
