Chapter 6 - Equilibria Flashcards
what is dynamic equilibrium
When the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backwards reaction in a closed system
What are the conditions for equilibrium to be reached
closed system
liquid or vapour (both have the same position of equilibrium)
equilibrium has been reached when the density, colour, concentration and pressure do not change
What happens to the position of equilibrium if you increase the amount of products
What is le Chateliers principle
If a system at equilibrium is disturbed , the equilibrium moves in the direction that tends to reduce the disturbance
What happens when you increase the concentration of one of the reactants in a mixture at equilibrium
it will increase the rate of the forwards reaction meaning that the equilibrium will shift to the left. If you increase the concentration of A it will counteract the change and decrease the concentration of A by reacting with it more.
What happens to the position of equilibrium as you increase the pressure
It will shift to the side with less molecules to counteract the increase in pressure.
What happens when you increase the temperature
the equilibrium will shift towards the endothermic (+∆H) side of the reaction to counteract the increase in temperature by decreasing it.
What is the effect of a catalyst on the position of equilibrium
No effect as it just increases the rate of reaction
what is the equation for Kc
what are the effects of temperature change on Kc
what is the effect of changing pressure on Kc
no effect
What does Kc indicate about a reaction in equilibrium
a Kc greater than 1 means position of equilibrium is to the right
a Kc less than 1 means position of equilibrium is to the left
