Chapter 6 Energy And Metabolism Flashcards
What is oxidation ? (Redox reactions)
Atoms or molecules loses an electron
What is thermodynamics ?
Branch of chemistry concerned with energy changes
What is reduction ? (Redox reactions)
Atoms or molecules gain an electron
, higher level of energy than oxidized form
What is oxidation-reduction reactions ?
It’s a redox, reactions always paired
First law of thermodynamics ?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
And energy can only change from one form to another
Second law of thermodynamics ?
Entropy(disorder) is continuously increasing
Energy transformations proceed spontaneously to convert matter from a more ordered/less stable form to less ordered/more stable form
Activation energy ?
Extra energy is required to destabilize existing bonds and initiate a chemical reaction
What does a catalyst do ?
Substances that influence chemical bonds in a way that lowers the activation energy( this does not alter the reactant or the product)
What does adenosine triphosphate (ATP) compose of?
This currency of cells composed of ribose 5 carbon sugars, adenine , 3 chains of phosphate
What is an enzyme ?
A biological catalysts
Pockets or clefts for substrate binding ?
Active site
When a substrate and binds with active is the enzyme, what is that called?
Enzyme-substrate complex
There are non-protein enzymes ? Which two kinds are these?
Intramolecular catalysis and intermolecular catalysis
Intramolecular ?
Catalyze reaction on RNA molecule itself
Intermolecular ?
RNA acts on another molecule
The rate of enzyme-catalyzed reaction depends on?
Concentrations of substrate and enzyme
An inhibitor is ?
Substance that binds to enzyme and decreases its activity
Competes with substrate for active site
Competitive inhibitor
Binds to enzyme at a site other than active site , and causes shape change that makes enzyme unable to bind substrate
Noncompetitive inhibitor
Total of all Chemical reactions carried out by an organism
Metabolism
Expend energy to build up molecules
Anabolic reaction ( anabolism)
Harvest energy by breaking down molecules
Catabolic reaction/ catabolism
What is energy ?
The capacity to do work
