Chapter 6 Child Victims And Witnesses Flashcards
Anatomically detailed dolls
A doll consistent with male or female anatomy, children can use them to show what happened when they cant verbalize it
Free recall vs directed questioning
Directed questioning more problematic - less accurate responses, yes no questions harder for children
Free recall - elicit shorter responses but more accurate
Why are children more suggestible than adults?
- children answer the way they think the interview desires (social compliance)
- changes to the cognitive system
Other techniques for interviewing children
- human figure drawings (HFD)
- criterion-based content analysis (CBCA)
- statement validity analysis (SVA)
Recall memory following a long delay
- childhood sexual abuse memories so traumatic they get repressed, it is only as adults and with the help of therapy that they can recall abuse through recovered memories
- false memory syndrome: false belief that they were sexually abused as a child without the memory of it, also through therapy ans suggestive techniques
Courtroom accomodations
- testifying behind a screen to seperate the child/defendent
- testimony via closed-circuit tv monitor, child with lawyers in seperate room from courtroom televised to courtroom
-having a support person while testifying
-video recorded while being interviewed about details of crime, video put into evidence - witness can testify for child ex: mother
-closing courtroom to public and media
