Chapter 6- Chemisty in Biology Flashcards
What are 3 parts of an atom? List their location and charge
Proton, P+, in the nucleus
Neutron, n0, in the energy level
Electron, e-, outside the nucleus
What is the difference between ionic and covalent bonds?
ionic bonds- electrical attraction between 2 oppositely charged atoms
covalent bonds- chemical bond that forms when electrons are shared.
Whats the difference between an element and compound?
element- substances that can’t be broken down by others
compound- substances formed when 2+ elements combine.
Why do chemical equations have to be balanced?
The Law of Conservation Of Mass
in a chemical eqaution where are the reactants and products located?
reactants-starting substance
products- formed during the reaction
What is the relationship between a enzyme and substrate?
enzyme- catalyst that speeds up the reaction
substrate- reactants that bind to the enzyme
What is a catalyst?
substance that lowers activation energy needed to start a reaction
why is water a polar molecule?
its bent shape and unequal ditribution of charge.
what is a hydrogen bond?
an easliy formed and broken bond.
what are 2 parts of a solution?
solvent - substance where another is dissolved.
solute- substance that gets dissolved in another
what is the ph base of an acid, base, and neutral?
acid = 0
neutral = 7
base = 14
why are buffers important?
they keep pH in range
what element do all organic compounds contain?
carbon
how many bonds can carbon form
4
what shapes of molecules can carbon form?
staright chains, bronched chains, rings
