what does the reactivity series do
ranks meals according to their reactivities. by doing this, it also predicts how certain simple reactions of metals with oxygen water and acids occur. predictons about more complex reactions can also be made where 1 metal competes with another to displace it. it also predicts the intensity of reactions
oxyacid
acid containg oxygen
H2SO4
H3PO4
HNO3
H2NO3
reaction of metals and oxygen
metal + oxugen –> metal oxide
reaction of metals and water
metal + water –> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
reaction of metals and acids
metal + acid –> salt + hydrogen
reactivity
how readily elements take part in reactions with other chemicals
redox reaction
involves the transfer of electrons between 2 chemical substances, 1 willing to accept them (reduced) and one wiing to donate them (oxidized)
oxidation
loses electrons
anything that gets oxidised is a reducing agent
anything getting oxidised increases in O.N
reduction
gains electrons
anything that gets reduced is an oxidising agent
anything getting reduced decreases in O.N
