Chapter 6 Flashcards
Visible light is
electromagnetic radiation
Because electromagnetic radiation carries energy through space, it’s also known as radiant energy
Types of electromagnetic radiation
- radio waves
- infrared radiation (heat) ex. from a glowing fireplace
- x-ray
these might seem different from one another but they all share certain fundamental characteristics
-> they all move through a vacuum at the speed of light
Wavelength
the distance between 2 adjacent peaks
Frequency
The # of complete wavelengths (or cycles) that pass a given point per second
the longer the wavelength
the smaller the frequency
- fewer cycles pass a given point per second
- the higher the energy
the shorter the wavelength
the higher the frequency
The relationship between wavelength and frequency
Λv = c
v (niu) = frequency
Λ (lambda) = wavelength
c = speed of light
Plank’s constant formula
E = hv
h = Plank’s constant
E = Energy
v = frequency
quantum
“fixed amount”
The smallest quantity of energy that can be absorbed or emitted as electromagnetic radiation
The photoelectric effect
light shining on a clean metal surface causes electrons to be emitted from the surface
Energy of photon
E = hv
λ = h / mv
λ = wavelength
m = mass
v = velocity
