Chapter 6 Flashcards
Clouds
Visible aggregates of droplets of water or crystals of ice
Condensation nuclei
Particles in the atmosphere that provide a surface for water vapor condensation
Cloud classifications
Cirrus: Thin wispy clouds of ice
Stratus: clouds appearing like sheets or layers
Cumulus: Clowns having vertical development
High clouds
Cirrus: thin white and wispy
Cirrocumulus: layered cloud with billows
Cirrostratus: Extensive shower clouds somewhat transparent to sunlight and moonlight
Middle clouds
Altocumulus: cloud containing pouches or rolls and generally opaque
Altostratus: Extensive watery layered cloud
Low clouds
Stratus: Uniform wear of low cloud ranging from Whitish to grey
Nimbostratus: Low cloud producing rain;darker skies than altostratus
Stratocumulus: Low-level equivalent to altocumulus
Contrails
Form under same conditions as any other clouds but most form when airplane exhaust adds sufficient water vapor to the air to cause saturation
Types of fog
Radiation fog
Advection fog
Upslope fog
Evaporation fog
Dew vs. frost
Dew= condensation of water droplets or two objects Frost= deposition of water vapor onto objects
Warm clouds
Clouds having temperatures above 0°C throughout
