Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is the significance of Amud in Israel?
> found Neandertal cranial remains between 50,000 and 70,000 BP with a cranial capacity of 1740cc (more that the human average)
Significance of remains found at Shanidar, Iraq?
> elderly male, 40-50 years old
found teeth heavily worn (due to diet)
front teeth worn down (teeth as tools, gripping)
distal portion missing on the left and right humerus
one is much thinner, indicating muscle wasn’t used as much
eye injury, arm amputation, foot with arthritis
the fact that the individual had all of these injuries, yet there was evidence of a long life span and the individual continued to have a food source indicates altruism (possibly the first source of altruism?)
La Chapelle aux Saints site, France
> nearly complete skeleton
buried in flexed position, with tools and animal bones around the individual
bone growth where teeth had been lost
>perhaps people cooked food that was soft
vertebrae indicated osteoarthritis
possibly altruism
Saint Cesaire France
> secondary burial recovered, cranial features less robust
>evidence that care had been taken to bury the individual
Scene of the Dead Man, Lascaux
> found cave art depicting a bison and a human
Blombos Cave, South Africa
> 77,000BP (not quite Late Stone Age yet)
found incised artifacts with red ochre
evidence of cave art
Magdelanian Woman
> Dordogne, France
>impacted teeth–> associated with dietary change
Sibudu Cave, Africa
> showed evidence of an early version of the bow and arrow
>atlatl
Chauvet Cave
> Evidence of megafauna
>cave bear claw marks?
Xianrendong Cave
> earliest examples of pottery
