Chapter 6 Flashcards
Moore’s Law
A prediction, named after Gordon Moore, the co-founder of Intel; states
that the number of transistors on a central processing unit chip will double every two
years.
CPU
Central Processing Unit is located on the system motherboard and is responsible
for processing instructions, performing calculations, and managing the flow of
information through compute
Main Components of a CPU-
Composed of Two Units
The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) – performs all the arithmetic, logic, and comparison
decisions
The Control Unit
– manages the switches inside the CPU (on/off)
6. Machine cycle - The series of steps a central processing unit goes through when it performs a program instruction
5.System clock-
This internal clock is actually a special crystal that acts like a
metronome, keeping a steady beat and controlling when the CPU moves to the next stage
of processing.
