Chapter 6 Flashcards
Mid-term Study
What is personality?
The unique psychological makeup of an individual and how it consistently influences how they respond to their environment.
What is the id?
The component of the self entirely oriented toward immediate gratification (based on the pleasure principle)
Explain the Superego.
A person’s conscience. The total opposite of the ID. It internalizes society’s rules and works to prevent ID from seeking selfish gratification.
What is the Ego?
The system that mediates between the ID and Superego. The Ego is basically the reasoning process that happens in the mind (eg. chocolate).
What is Motivational Research?
Research based largely on psychoanalytic (Freudian) interpretations, with a heavy emphasis on unconscious motives.
Freudian Systems
The belief that personality is fundamentally a conflict between gratification and responsibility.
