Chapter 6 Flashcards
Extinction
What are the three traits of a rare species?
Restriction to rare habitats, restriction to a small geographic range, and low population density.
Why are some species restricted to rare habitats?
- Some species are adapted to the conditions only found in rare habits
- Some species might be out-competed by superior competitive species in other areas
Why are some species restricted to a small geographical region?
Some barriers isolate the species
Why is low population density a trait of a rare species?
- Body size plays a role as large. animals need more space, so there is a lower population density.
- There are not enough resources to supply the population.
An example of low population density
Maned wolf
Example of small geographic range species
Sui quid fish
Example of a rare habitat species
Blind salamander
Why are some species more vulnerable to extinction?
- Environmental change can push rare species over the brink.
- Demographic problems: An unbalanced sex ratio means the lower reproductive rate
- Rare species suffer from bottlenecks, drift, inbreeding
Four factors for increased vulnerability to human activities
- Habitat Overlap
- Human Targeting
- Large Home Ranges
- Limited adaptability / resilience
What factors drive small populations to extinction?
- Demographic Stochasticity
- Environmental Stochasticity
- Catastrophes
- Genetic Stochasticity
