Chapter 6 Flashcards
Define Elements
Pure Subtances that cannot be broken down by physical or chemical means
All are organized on the periodic table
Compounds
A pure substance formed from two or more combined elements
Chemical Reaction
The process in which atoms or groups of atoms are reorganized into different substances
Mixtures
a combination of two or more substances where they keep their properties and charictaristics
Homogeneous mixture
a mixture that has uniform composition throughout. meaning mixed well and not separated
Heterogeneous Mixture
a mixture that is not well mixed or is separated
ex oil and water, salad
colloids
a heterogeneous mixture that does not sepparate
ex mayo,paint,smoke
Acids
substances that have a low Ph which means more H ions
Bases
Substances of Higher Ph that have less H ions
Diffusion
The process of solute moving from High to low concentration
Osmosis
Movement of water through a selective membrane.
Low to High concentration
Isomers
Elements that have the same chemical formula but different shapes
Isotopes
Same atomic number but different atomic mass
Saccharides
Sugars
Basic formula CH2O
Monosaccharides
sugar
ring or chain bonds
3-6 carbons
