They had distorted and one-sided info spread by the Japanese to influence people´s opinions

They provided textbooks to 20,000 students, provided jobs in the Japanese government, and favoured Malays and Indians in terms of food distribution

The Japanese received positive response from Malay nationalists eg Kesatuan Melayu Muda, and Japanese were portrayed to be liberators and benefactors to gain support

Locals learnt Japanese in school, and were awarded by competitions, awards, extra rations, and promotions, read books that were praising Japan, sang Japanese anthem, learn judo

Why were there food shortages?
There was trade distrupted by war and loss of british rule most of the food went to the japanese soldiers, and there was rationing to distribute limited supply
What was the impact of the food shortages?
it was a hard life, they had little and poor food, they suffered from malnutrition and death, and some turned to stealing food which had harsh punishments if caught

there was poor living conditions such as hard labour for prisoners building the Siam-Burma railway
