Chapter 6 Flashcards
Electrolyte
The compound that is broken down by electrolysis
Anode
Positive
Cathode
Negative
Electrodes
Made out of graphite - unreactive, can conduct electricity
Electrolysis
The electrolyte is put into the solution
The electrodes are connected to a power source, which is then turned on
The ions will be attracted to the electrode with the opposite charge
The less reactive element will be discharged at the electrode if there are multiple options
OR (for aqueous solutions)
At cathode: Water
At anode: Halide ion THEN Hydroxide THEN all other negatively charged ions
RedOx in electolysis
Reduced at cathode
Oxidised at anode
Electrolysis of aluminium
Once purified, the aluminium must be melted
Aluminium has a very high melting point, so has to be mixed with cryolite to reduce this melting point
