What is our character?
It is our moral identity or the net effect of all our moral choices. Good or bad.
What defines who we are in influences, how we act?
Our character.
A person who consistently does what is good is considered what?
Virtuous.
What is a virtue?
It is a firm and habitual disposition to do good.
What are natural virtues?
They are those virtues that are acquired through repeated good actions.
What are supernatural virtues?
They are those virtues resulting from God acting on our soul in someway.
What are intellectual virtues?
They are those virtues that perfect the intellect and its grasp of the truth.
What are the 5 intellectual virtue?
- Wisdom
- Understanding
- Science
- Art
- Prudence.
What are the moral virtues?
They are those virtues that regulate our moral life.
What are the 4 Cardinal virtues?
- Prudence
- Temperance
- Fortitude 4. Justice
What are Cardinal virtues?
They are the 4 principal virtues which all other moral virtues are grouped around.
Why are they called Cardinal virtues?
Because (in Latin Cardo means hinge, and) just as a door opens on its hinges are moral life hinges on the Cardinal virtues.
What does Prudence do?
It perfects our intellect in it’s use of reason.
Why does prudence perfect our intellect in its use of reason?
So that we can discern the true good, in every circumstance, and the right means to achieve it.
What is reason?
Reason is the ability to think logically, make judgments, and draw conclusions.
What is Justice?
It disposes our will to always give God and our neighbor their due.
What do we call the specific moral virtue by which we practiced justice toward God?
It is known as the virtue of religion.
What is Fortitude?
It is the Cardinal virtue that regulates the irascible passions of our sense appetite, so that we remain firm and consistent in doing what is right, despite difficulties, hardships, or dangers.
What are the irascible passions?
They pertain to what is perceived as a difficult good, or a threatening difficulty, or danger.
What are 3 passions included in the irascible passions?
Daring, fear, and anger
What is the sense appetite?
Sense appetite refers to the physical drives and tendencies within us that draw us towards what is perceived as desirable, and away from what is perceived as undesirable.
What is Patience?
It is the virtue by which a person endures suffering or hardship, without being unreasonably, saddened or agitated.
What is Perseverance?
It is the virtue by which person firmly strives for the good, regardless of the obstacles involved, or the time required.
Magnanimity is also known as what?
