Chapter 6 Flashcards
1
Q
tread
A
- piece of steel that makes up the steps of the stairs
- can be made from grating or from pans
- grating is usually used in industrial buildings while pans are usually used in commercial structures
2
Q
stringers
A
- support the end of treads
- often rectangular hollow sections, channels or plate
- the top of the stringer is connected to either a supporting beam or dog leg
- the bottom of the stringer is connected to a supporting beam, dog leg or to the ground
3
Q
supporting beam
A
- support the stringer or dog leg
- each stringer can be independently supported
- alternatively both stringers can be supported with the same supporting beam
- usually wide flange sections or channels
4
Q
dog leg
A
- location of the supporting beams determine whether dog legs are actually needed
- a dog leg is needed when a viable connection cannot be made to the supporting beam directly from the stringer
- dog leg can be the support for the landing at the top of the stair, if one exists
5
Q
special pans
A
- required at the top and bottom of a pan stair
- one special pan closes the star against the concrete or platform
- other pan closes off the top of the stair
