Chapter 6 Flashcards
Why are the walls of the atria thinner ( and weaker ) than the walls of the ventricles
because blood is pumped out of the heart at greater pressure from these chambers compared to the atria
Many people suffer from problems caused by damage to the valves in their heart.
In terms of blood flow, what problems might they have?
Shortness of breath, particularly when active or lying down. Swelling of your ankles and feet. Dizziness. Fainting
Compare blood in the pulmonary artery and in the pulmonary vein in terms of:
(a) Pressure
(b) Oxygen and carbon dioxide content.
( a ) The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood, unlike the rest of the arteries. The pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood, unlike the rest of the veins.
(b) The pulmonary artery carries Carbon-dioxide rich blood to the lungs. The pulmonary vein carries oxygen-rich blood to the lungs.
Why do most arteries contain oxygen-rich blood?
Arteries carry blood from the heart to different organs and hence it is oxygen rich in most cases. But, the blood from the heart to the lungs is carried by the pulmonary artery which needs oxygen.
Why does blood in the pulmonary vein have lower pressure than the blood in the pulmonary artery?
The pulmonary circulation is a relatively low pressure system compared to the systemic circulation because the pulmonary arteries are not as muscularized as their systemic counterparts.
Describe the changes in the blood that take place in:
(a) The intestines
(b) The lungs.
(a) blood gains food, water and carbon dioxide and loses oxygen
(b) blood gains oxygen and loses carbon dioxide and water
Name the blood vessel that takes blood:
(a) From the heart to the lungs
(b) From the arms and legs to the heart.
(a) pulmonary artery
(b) inferior vena cava
