- Transmission: Airborne/contact (very contagious in confined spaces)
- Initial symptoms: Resembles a cold, fever, headache, muscle ache
- Main Characteristic: Swollen salivary gland (ovaries/testes/pancreas)

- Aka: Varicell Zoster Virus
- Family: Togaviridae
- Linear, single stranded enveloped RNA - 10,000-12,000 nucleotides
- Transmission: Airborne
- Multiplies in the URT and conjunctiva. From the eye, it travels to the intestinal tract, urinary tract, skin and CNS>
- For pregnant women, it can travel accross the placenta

Chickenpox
A
- Varicella Virus or Zoster Virus
- Family: Herpesvirus (aka varicella zoster virus)
- Linear, double stranded enveloped DNA - 125,000
- Transmission: Airborne and Contact (highly contagious)
- Main Characteristics: Small, itchy, fluid-filled blisters that can form anywhere on the body.
- No longer contagious when scabs form over blisters
- The zoster virus will remain dormant in the body for the rest of the life.
