The starches and sugars found in foods
Glucose
A simple sugar and the body’s main fuel
Glycogen
A starchlike substance
Proteins
Nutrients that help build and maintain body tissues.
Amino acids
Chemical substances that make up body proteins.
Lipid
A fatty substance that does not dissolve in water.
Linoleic acid
An essential fatty acid not made in the body but that is necessary for growth and healthy skin.
Cholesterol
An essential structural component of animal cell membranes
Vitamins
Compounds that help regulate many vital body processes, including the digestion, absorption, metabolism and use of nutrients.
Minerals
Inorganic substances that the body cannot manufacture but that act as catalysts, regulating many vital body processes.
Recommended Dietary Allowances
The amount of nutrients that will prevent deficiencies and excesses in most healthy people.
