Midline
the imaginary line drawn down the center of the body, through the nose and umbilicus (belly button), dividing the body into right and left halves
Correct Anatomical Position
when the person is standing, facing forward, palms forward
Mid-axillary lines
the imaginary lines on both sides of the body drawn from armpit to ankle, diving the body into anterior and posterior
Anterior
Front
-remember antes (before in spanish)
Posterior
back
-remember POST means after or behind
Torso
refers to the chest
Medial
toward the midline
*a cut on the inside of your thigh is medial
Lateral
away from the midline
*a cut on the outside of your thigh is lateral
Proximal
towards the body/torso
Distal
towards fingers or toes
Right and Left
when referring to right or left, you must refer to the PATIENTS right or left side
Unilateral
one-sided
-uni means one
Bilateral
both sides
-Bi means two
Dorsal
another term for the back of something
-for example the back of your hand
Ventral
the front of something
-for example: your palm
Plantar
refers to your feet
Palmar
refers to your hand
-PALM
Prone
when you are lying on your stomach
Supine
laying on your back
-if you take out the “u” it spells SPINE
Fowler’s Position
a sitting position
Trendelenburg
sitting with your knees elevated
Shock Position
supine with the legs higher than the heart (elevating legs or tilting the bed)
Skull
houses and protects the brain
Spinal Column
- cervical (7 vertebrae)
- thoracic (12 vertebrae one for each rib)
- lumbar (5 vertebrae)
- sacral (5 vertebrae)
- coccyx (4 vertebrae)
Thorax
the chest
made up of 12 ribs
pelvis
consists of iliac crests (pelvic wings), pubis (the anterior portion you can palate and the itchum, which is inferior and posterior) this is the bone you hurt when you fall on your butt
Upper Extremities
consists of clavicles or collarbones, the scapula (shoulder blade) and the accromion or the tip of your shoulder
