Chapter 5 - Torques and Moments of Force Flashcards
Define torque (moment of force)
Torque is the turning effect produced by a force. It is also know as a moment of force
What is torque dictated by (two things)
Torque is dictated by the point of application and the line of action of the force
Define static equilibrium
For an object to be in static equilibrium, the external forces must sum to zero and the external torques (about any axis) must sum to zero as well.
Define center of gravity
Centre of gravity is the point at which the entire mass or weight of the body may be concentrated
Define stability
Stability is the ability to return to equilibrium or its original position after being displaced.
List the factors that affect stability
i. Weight
ii. Base of support
iii. Height of the centre of gravity within the base of support
