Chapter 5: Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 major types of tissues?
Epithelial tissue
Connective tissue
Muscle tissue
Nervous tissue
What are the types of glandular secretion? And their functions?
Merocrine glands: a fluid product released through the cell membrane by exocytosis
Apocrine glands: lose small parts of cell during secretion
Holocrine glands: release entire cells filled with product
What are the structural types of exocrine glands?
Simple:
Compound:
Tubular:
Alveolar:
What are fibroblasts?
Large star shaped cell
What are the types of intercellular junctions?
Tight junctions, Desmosomes, Gap junctions
What are the characteristics of tight junctions?
close space between cells by fusing cell membranes; blood-brain barrier
What are the characteristics of Desmosomes?
Bind cells by forming “spot welds” b/w cell membranes; Located among outer skin cells
What are the characteristics of Gap junctions?
form tubular channels b/w cells that allow exchange of substances; located in cardiac muscle cells
What type of gland are salivary and sweat glands?
Merocrine
What type of gland are mammary and ceremonious glands?
Apocrine
What type of gland are sebaceous glands?
Holocrine
What are the 2 types of glands? and what do they do?
Endocrine: secrete into tissue fluid or blood
Exocrine: Secrete into ducts that open onto surface
Where is nervous tissue found? What is its function?
Found in brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.
Sensory reception, release of neurotransmitters, and conduction of electrical impulses.
What are the 3 types of epithelial membranes?
Serous membranes
mucous membranes
cutaneous membranes
How is synovial membranes different from epithelial membranes?
Composed entirely from connective tissue; lines joint cavities
