Chapter 5: The Visual System Flashcards
egocentric localization
The representatiion of pace in a body-centred oordinate system (e.g., The cup is to my right).
allocentric localization
The representation of space in an environment-centered coordinate system (e.g., The cup is on the table).
double dissociation of function
A pattern f results in which damage to area A affects performance n task X, but no on task Y; whereas damage to area B affects performance on task Y, but not on task X.
anoxia
Deprivation of oxygen to brain tissue
viral encephalitis
Acute inflammation of the brain due to viral infection.
invariant
The property of not responding to changes along a particular dimension.
fundus
The “bottom” of a sulcus, where its two banks meet.
binding problem
The fact that anatomically discrete parts of the brain encode what an object is vs. where it is, yet our perception is of an object occupying (i.e., “bound to”) a location.
superior temporal polysensory area (STP)
Th region in the superior temporal gyrus of the monkey that receives inputs from visual, auditory, and somatosenory regions, and in which many neurons respond to more than one sensory modality.
type vs. token
These two words are used to distinguish a category of stimulus (e.g., the category of faces) from a specific exemplar from within that category (e.g., my father’s face).
phylogeny
The evolutionary history of organismal lineage.
ontogeny
The development of an organism; in the case of vertebrates, from fertilization through birth and the entirety of the lifespan.
