Chapter 5 the inside of the cell Flashcards
What are the implications of cell theory?
- Functions of all cells are similar.
- Life is continuous.
- Origin of life was the origin of cells.
Why are cells small?
Cells are usually small because a high surface-area-to-volume ratio is essential for many cell functions.
Magnification…
Ratio of an objects image size to its real size.
Resolution…
Measure of the clarity of image, or the minimum distance of two distinguishable points.
Contrast…
Differences in intensity between two objects or between an object and its background. Staining increases contrast.
Light Microscope:
Glass lenses and light
Resolution Limit= 0.2 micrometers
Electron microscopes:
Electromagnets focus an electron beam.
Resolution Limit= 0.2 nm
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
Sees the guts of the cell
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
Only shows the outside of the cell.
What is the cell membrane?
The outer boundary of every cell and has similar structure in all cells.
Two types of cells:
Prokaryote and Eukaryote
What does the nucleoid do in a prokaryote cell?
The nucleoid is where the DNA is located in the cell.
Ribosomes
sites of protein synthesis
Cytoplasm:
The space between the plasma membrane and the nucleus.
Cytosol:
jelly like fluid of the cell
