Chapter 5 Terrestrial Biomes Flashcards
How do mountains affect climate?
Warm air reaches mountain as it rises to cross the mountains it cools this results jn rain/ snow this results in desserts on the back side of a mountain
How do precipitation and temperature affect terrestrial biomes?
Without precipitation means no rainfall which leads to a dessert or tundra
Moderate rainfall
Grassland
Temperature determines
What kind of forest it will be
Desserts are
Dry hot
Tundra
Cold winters hot cool summers
Grasslands
4 seasons most converted jnto farmland
Tropical rainforests
Precipitation year round
Nutrient poor
Wet and dry seasons
Rich soil for agriculture
Tropical seasonal forests
Cool raining forest of evergreen conifers
Mid temperatures year round abundant rainfall
Temperate rainforest
Long and cold winters
Short summers
Boreal forest
How do u measure productivity
Species diversity
Biomass- amount of living material
Primary production - rate of photosynthesis
Which biomass are most productive?
Most - tropical rainforests, estuaries, wetlands, coral reefs
Which biomass are least productive
Open ocean ecosystems
How do convection currents affect climate?
Caused by warm air rising where it can no longer hold as much moisture so it forms clouds and rain
