Prima facie
(Latin) At first sight; a presumption that the facts as presented are true and establish a fact.
Immunity
A grant to an individual that exempts him from being prosecuted based on the testimony that he gives.
Subpeona
A court order that a person or item be produced to the court at a specific date and time.
Quash
Do away with, annul, overthrow, cease.
Privilege
A right to refuse to answer questions and to prevent disclosure of information communicated within a legally recognized confidential relationship.
True bill
A grand jury’s determination that there is sufficient probable cause to continue the prosecution against the accused.
No bill
A grand jury’s determination that there is insufficient probable cause to continue the prosecution against the accused.
Bill of particulars
A motion filed by the defendant that requests additional information about the crime listed in a charging document.
Arraignment
A court hearing at which the defendant is informed of the charge against him and given the opportunity to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.
Bench Warrant
A court order direction law enforcement to arrest a specific individual and to hold him until a specific court date.
