Agents of Socialization
forces in a persons life that teach them about the world and their place in it

part of the personality that aims to achieve balance
Feral Children
a human child that has lived isolated from human contact from a very young age and lacks an understanding of social behavior and human language

social and cultural expectations for behavior based on gender
Gender Socialization
process of teaching people how to behave under social expectations based on their assigned gender (gender roles)
Generalized Other
ability to recognize behaviors and expectations in society & regulate ones behaviors according to them
Id
basic drives (food, shelter, sex, etc.)
Latent Function
an unintended consequence or outcome of an activity or social system
Life Course
a sequence of socially defined events and roles that the individual enacts over time
Manifest Function
sought out consequences of a behavior in society
Re-socialization
process of Socialization that involves a radical transformation of an individual’s values, beliefs, & self-conceptions
Self
a persons distinct sense of identity
Socialization
process by which people are taught to be proficient members of a society
Superego
culture within (values, norms, etc.)
Total Institution
institution that controls almost all aspects of a members life
