Chapter 5 science study guide Flashcards
Producers
An organism that makes its own food. They are also called autotrophs or self-feeders.
Consumers
Organisms get their energy by eating other organisms. They are also called heterotrophs or other feeders.
Decomposers
Consumers get their food by breaking down organic matter from dead organisms.
Herbivores
They are plants and get their energy source is producers.
Carnivores
They are organisms that get their energy source from other consumers.
Omnivores
They are organisms that get their source of energy from both herbivores and carnivores.
Photosynthesis
A process where energy from the sun enters an ecosystem when organisms use sunlight to make sugar.
Cellular Respiration
The process of breaking down carbohydrates to yield energy.
Food Chain
The path in which energy is transferred from one organism to the next as each organism eat another organism.
Food Web
includes more organisms and shows the feeding relationships between organisms that are possible in an ecosystem.
Trophic Level
Each step through which energy is transferred in food chain.
Trophic Cascades
Powerful indirect interactions that can control entire ecosystems.
Primary Consumer
They are herbivores and they’re on the second level of the trophic level
Secondary Consumer
They’re on the third trophic level and they are carnivores.
Tertiary Consumer
They’re on the fourth and last level. They are omnivores they don’t get as much energy as secondary or primary consumers.
