CHAPTER 5 BIOLOGY Flashcards
Gradual process of a species becoming extinct
Background extinction
A large scale dying out of a large percentage of all living organisms in an area within a short time
Mass extinction
Any material or organism in the biosphere, including water, soil, fuel, and plants and animals
Natural Resources
Overuse of species within an economic value, a factor in species extinction
Overexploration
Habitat loss from separation of an ecosystem into small pieces of land
Habitat fragmentation
Any different environmental condition occurring a long and ecosystem boundaries
Edge effects
Increasing concentration of toxic substances, such as DDT and organisms as trophic levels increase in food, chains or food webs
Biological magnification
Water pollution from nitrogen rich to phosphorus, rich substances flowing into waterways, causing Algal overgrowth
Eutrophication
Non-native species deliberately are accidentally introduced into a new habitat
Introduced species
Any resource replaced by natural process more quickly than it is consumed
Renewable Resource
Any natural resources available in limited amounts or replaced extremely slowly by natural process
Nonrenewable resource
Use of resources at a rate that they can be replaced or recycled
Sustainable use
Found only in one specific geographic
Endemic
Technique using living organisms to detoxify a polluted area
Bioremediation
Technique of adding essential materials to a degraded system
Biological augmentation
