Types of Intersections
Controlled intersections

Stopping At intersections
- Stop line - just before the line
- Crosswalk - just before the crosswalk
- Unmarked crosswalk - just before where it would be
- No line/walk or sidewalk - just before intersection
Right of way at intersection
Keep traffic moving orderly

Intersections controlled by traffic lights
-steady red - Complete stop
-Steady green - go only if clear
-Stale green - clues for it to change yellow
-Fresh green - scan before entering.
-Steady yellow - before entering
-Flashing Green - scan for pedestrians
-Point of no Return - judge accurately not to be in the intersection whe the light turns red.
Can you back up in an intersection or over a crosswalk?
No it’s illegal
Separate Left turn Signals
Green Arrow to turn

Come to a complete stop
then proceed if clear
2 way Stops
only one street has stop sign

4 Way Stops
-1st comes to a stop goes 1st
-2 at same time, right goes 1st
-2 at same time opposite, Left turn yeild to straight
Intersection with yeild signs
-traffic on thru road have right away
-enter without stopping if no
-pedestrians,cyclists of vehicles on the thry road.
-slow down and wait for a gap
Traffic Circles (smaller than Roundabouts)
-slow down at approach
-obey signs, if no signs treat as uncontrolled
-Yield to traffic in circle, yeild to right away
-drive into the circle to the right ( counterclockwise)
Roundabouts
-more than 1 lane
-signs and markings for where to go
-turn left be in left lane
-turn right be in right lane
-straight can be in either
-do not change lanes
-do not ride alonside a vehicle
-signal right to exit
What lane should you travel in on multi lane highway?
one of the 2 right hand lanes
What lane should you travel in on a freeway with more that n 2 lanes?
Right in the centre lane or right hand lane
What is sometimes called Lane Tracking?
-get into the right lane to end up in correct lane after a complete turn
Right Turn lane positions
- move into the right lane
-yield right lane - Yeild to traffice
Left Turn lane position from 2 way to a 2 way
move into center lane, to center lane of the cross street
Left turn lane position from 1 way to a 2 way
Turn from left lane into the center lane
Left turn lane from a 2 way onto a 1 way
turn from the center lane into the left lane.
Left turn lane from a 1 way to a 1 way
turn from the left lane into the left lane
Multiple turning lanes
-turning from far left - turn into the far left
-turning from lane next to it - turn inot the lane next tot he far left lane.
Two-way left turn lanes
vehicle from either direction
use same land to turn left.
Turns in the middle of a block
-safer to plan route to turn right rather than cross traffic/solid or double line
-of left turn across but be careful and safe
U-Turns are illegal when?
-interfere with traffic
-on a curve
-crest of hill (traffic within 150 meters)
-sign prohibits U turns
-intersection with a traffic light
-business district - unless intersecion with no traffic light
-municipal by law prohibits
-ride aroud the block instead!
Reserved Lanes - HOV lane
High Occupancy Vehicles
-buses, carpools, sometimes motocyles, bikes and taxis
-Freeways/highways
-median or shoulder
-mostly 24 hours sometimes just peak times
-enter and exit only on broken lines
Turning from a reserved lane
turn to right lane beside it then move into it where permitted then prepare for the turn.
Bus Lanes
-diamond symbol & bus picture
-motocycles are not permitted
-vanpools 6+ with a permit are allowed.
Bicycle Lanes
-don’t ride or Stop or Park in a bicylce lane
-only cross, when white line is broken
-only cross to turn into into or out of a driveway.
-Signal well ahead and yield to a bicycle

Pulling into a lane
-yield to right of way
- don’t cut off
-watch for smaller traffic
-large enough gap
-must signal
Passing
-Yield to right of way
-pass on right if two or more lanes going same direction
-Pass on left when safe and permitted
-not permitted to pass over double yellow solids
-too risky on a solid yellow line
-keep speed limits
-pavement markings allow a pass
Merging signs
- tells when the lane is ending
-adjust speed, wait for gap in other lane
Entrances
-use entrance ramp to scan for safe gap
-use to match your speed with traffic
Exits
-maintain speed until entered exit lane
- Lowe speed in exit lane
Freeway Courtesy
-pull to left lane to allow for other vehicles to merge from entrance lanes
-adjust speed to allow for enough gap
Cul-de-sacs & Turning Around
-slow down keep to right
-scan for children and driveways
-series of turns at an intersection
-clear and no other traffice near
Parking Tips and Rules
-not blocking traffic
-legal and safe
-street - park 45 degree angle & visable
-choose level ground
- if slope face uphill and in gear
It’s illegal to park when
-Sidewalk/Boulevard
-across entrance/driveways/backlanes or intersection
-5 m of Fire hydrant
-6 m of crosswalk or intersection
-6 m of stop sign or traffic light
-15 m of railway
- in a bike lane
-on bridge or highway tunnel
-obstucts a sign
-sign prohibits
-yellow or red curb
-disabilities, yellow striped access
