Chapter 5 Review Questions Flashcards
What does the word “incarnation” mean? How does the opening story relate to the Incarnation of Jesus?
Incarnation means to make flesh. It describes God’s embodiment as a human in Jesus. The opening story relates to the Incarnation of Jesus because Tracy wanted to become a bird and show them the way, just like God did with us.

Jesus Christ is the fullest, most complete sacrament of God to the world.
What is the paschal mystery? What do Jesus’ death on the cross and his Resurrection tell us about God?
Paschal means passover. The Paschal Mystery is Jesus Christ’s death and Resurrection, his Ascension to the Father, and his sending of the Holy Spirit on his followers. Jesus’ death on the cross tells us about how God is present with us in the midst of our suffering and pain. Jesus’ Resurrection shows us the power and victory of God in the world. (life, not death, has the last word)
What does Jesus’ humanity model for us human beings?
The Christian church declares that Jesus is both fully God and fully human. His humanity models a picture of what we humans can be and what God desires for us.
Why is Pentecost often called the birthday of the Christian church?
Because the church was charged on the day of Pentecost to be a sacrament of Jesus Christ to the world, a sign and instrument of Christ’s continuing real presence in the world.

The seven sacraments express the faith of the Church, who the church is, and renew and strengthen the faith of the church by giving us divine life.

It means that the sacraments are capable of effecting change in us and the world because of God’s power, not our own.
Why is the disposition of those receiving the sacraments important?
It is important because it is their inner attitude and readiness for a particular sacrament.
Give the Catechism’s definition of Sacraments.
The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions.
