Chapter 5 Quiz Flashcards
older athletes…
know how to maximize their balance and stability.
Stability
related to mass and inertia, and it is a battle of torques.. Specifically relates to how much resistance athletes “put up” to keep their balance.
Efficient stances and proper mechanics
maximize stability.
balance
ability to control movements for a particular purpose. Can be affected by gravity, air resistance, friction, and forces applied by the opponent.
Linear Stability
resistance of a moving object or athlete to being stopped or having its direction of movement altered. Directly related mass and inertia.
rotary stability
resistance against being tilted, spun, or tipped over or the ability to keep spinning when an outside force is trying to diminish the rate of that spin.
When athletes center of gravity is well outside their base of support…
athlete becomes stable.
base of support
the area on the ground enclosed by the points of contact by one’s limbs.
Line of gravity
a vertical line from the center of gravity to the surface. The bigger the base, the easier to have the line of gravity within the base.
dynamic balance
balance on the move. we maneuver the line of gravity constantly, and become stable and unstable because of it. Ability to alter line of gravity while moving to stay stable on the move.
attack counter attack
line of gravity shifts forward to absorb hit.
