Chapter 5 Pt 1 Flashcards
Sensation
The process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energies from our environment
Perception
Process of organizing and interpreting sensory information enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events
Bottom up processing
Analysis that begins with the sensory receptors and works up to the brain
Top down processing
Information processing guided by a higher level mental process.
Prosopangosia
Complete sensation but incomplete perception
Absolute threshold
Minimum stimulation needed to detect a particular stimulus
Signal detection theory.
Predicting how or when we detect the presence of faint stimulus.
Subliminal
Below ones absolute threshold for conscious awareness
Priming
The activation, often unconsciously of certain associations.
Webers law
Associated a constant percentage
Sensory adaptation
Diminishing sensitivity to an unchanging stimulus
Transduction
Conversion of one energy to another
Wavelength
Distance from one wavelength to another
Hue
Color
Intensity
Amount of energy in the light waves
Cornea
Light enters, protective covering
Pupil
Adjustable opening
Iris
Muscle that controls the pupil
Lens
Allows focus, flexible
Accommodation
Change in shape
Retina
Light sensitive, inner surface of the eye
Acuity
Sharpness of vision
Nearsightedness
Can see near, not far
Farsightedness
Can see far, not near
Rods
Detect black white and grey
Cones
Retinal receptor cells, located in center of vision
