Chapter 5 Pathology Flashcards
Anemia
Blood transfusion, (headaches, tiredness,weakness,dizziness,etc…)
Aplastic Anemia
bone marrow is not able to produce RBC’s
Hemolytic Anemia
destruction of RBC’s
Sickle-Cell Anemia
genetic disorder where bone marrow produces misshaped RBC’s
Hemophilia
genetic disorder where you cannot clot properly (thrombocytes)
Leukemia
cancer of bone marrow where WBC’s are overproduced and do not function properly.
Multiple Myeloma
malignant cancer in bone marrow which produces cells
Polycythemia
excessive production of RBC’s.. also bone marrow disorder…(not cancerous)
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which destroys T-cells (wbc’s)
Autoimmune Disease
immune system attacks a chosen tissue/organ in your body
Immunodeficiency Disorder
Immune system is comprised
Iron Deficiency Anemia
the body can’t make new RBC’s due to dietary deficient iron intake
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
malignant cancer of spleen,liver,bone marrow,nodes
Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
malignant cancer of lymphocytes
Mononucleosis (mono)
caused by Epstein Barr virus and results in an increase in a typical monocytes and lymphocytes
Splenomegaly
omit,enlarged spleen
Apheresis
seperation of blood components using a special machine in and effort to remove autoantibodies
Blood chemistry Profile
gives info about heart disease, kidney func., sugars
Coagulation Test
Clotting function test
Complete Blood Count
tells how many cells are in blood
Cross-matching
blood typing
Red Blood Cell Morphology
microscopic examination of RBC’s to determine morphology
Serology Test
blood test to screen for antigen-antibody reactions..signals,presence of disease
Antibody Therapy
use of synthetic (lab made) antibodies to treat diseases that affect the immune system;or patients who are immunosuppressed
Antineoplastic
drug that blocks growth of a new tumor
Blood Transfusion
donation of blood from one person to another
Cytotoxic Drug
used to kill virus and cancer cells
Immunosuppressant
drug that suppresses the immune system
Biopsy
collection of tissue to look under microscope
Bone marrow biopsy
Excisional biopsy
removal of entire lesion or tumor
Incisional biopsy
making an incision and removing a piece of tissue
Needle biopsy
using a needle to extract a sample of tissue
