Chapter 5: Operating Systems Flashcards
The fundamental controller for all system resources
Operating system
The fundamental, primitive functions of an operating system that are basic to enforcing security as well as the higher-level operating system functions
The kernel
The first operating systems; simple utilities designed to assist individual programmers and smooth the transition from one user to another; consider passive as these operating systems wait for a request and provide service on demand
Executives
Operating systems that oversee each program’s execution; considered active OSes as they actively assert control of the system and give resources to users only when the request is consistent with general good use of the system
Multiprogrammed OSes or monitors
