Chapter 5- Membranes Flashcards
Phospholipids
Phospholipid Bilayer
Integral membrane proteins
Peripheral proteins
Glycoproteins
Passive Transport
when molecules move from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration; requires NO ENERGY (ex. diffusion and facilitated channel)
Active Transport
when molecules move from a LOW concentration to HIGH concentration; requires energy and a protein carrier (example is the sodium/potassium pump).
Facilitated diffusion:
when molecule diffuses across membrane with help from a protein carrier.
Diffusion
when molecules move from high to low concentration until they reach equilibrium; it doesn’t require energy.
Things that affect diffusion rates
Glucose transport protein
Osmosis
when water diffuses from high to low concentration thru permeable membrane.
