Chapter 5 Integumentary System Flashcards
7 Major Functions of Skin
Thermoregulation via negative feedback
Protection, physical chemical & biological barrier
Cutaneous Sensations
Excretion and Absorbion - Sweat secretion, Absorb heavy metals
Synthesis of Vitamin D
Blood Resivor - Stores up to 5% of blood supply
Immunity
What are the 2 major regions of skin
Epidermis & Dermis
Epidermis
Outermost superfical layer
Dermis
Vascular middle region
Hypodermis
Deepest region- not part of the skin!
4 Types of epidermal cells
Keratincytes- 90%
Melanocytes- produces melanin-skin pigement
Dendritic Cells - Found in bone marrow
Merkel Cells- Deepest layer of epidermis fuctions as touch receptors
Basale Layer
deepest Epidermis layers
single layer of keratinocytes
Rapid Cell Division
Keratinocytes, Melanocytes and Merkel cells found here
Stratum Spinosum (prikely layer)
8-10 rows of tightly packed cells
Langerhans and Grandual found here
Stratum Granulosum (Granular layer)
3-5 rows of flattened Keratincytes
Different colours
lamellated grandules release lipids=waterproof=death
Stratum Lucidium
Not found in all layers of skin- only hands and feet
3-5 layers of clear flat dead cells
Stratum Corneum
25-30 layers of flat dead cells filled with keratin
How many Epidermal layers are there
4-5
