Chapter 5: Hydrostatic Skeleton Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 5 requirements for a hydrostatic skeleton?
A
- Presence of a cavity housing an incompressible fluid that transmits pressure changes uniformly in all directions
- Cavity is surrounded by a flexible outer body membrane, so that the outer body wall can be deformed
- Volume of fluid in cavity remains constant
- Animal is capable of forming temporary attachments on the substrate, if progressive locomotion is to occur on or within a substrate
- Presence of a deformable but elastic covering or at least two sets of muscles that can act against each other
2
Q
What is the acting of muscles against each other?
A
Antagonism
3
Q
Two sets of muscles described within a hypothetical organism that is cylindrical
A
- longitudinal muscles
- circular muscles
