Chapter 5: Hydrostatic Skeleton Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 5 requirements for a hydrostatic skeleton?

A
  1. Presence of a cavity housing an incompressible fluid that transmits pressure changes uniformly in all directions
  2. Cavity is surrounded by a flexible outer body membrane, so that the outer body wall can be deformed
  3. Volume of fluid in cavity remains constant
  4. Animal is capable of forming temporary attachments on the substrate, if progressive locomotion is to occur on or within a substrate
  5. Presence of a deformable but elastic covering or at least two sets of muscles that can act against each other
