The power to make the laws was given to the representatives in parliament
First Great Awakening
A religious movement where preachers presented powerful sermons and preaching salvation (“God sees all PURITANS equally”)
Proclamation of 1763
when king George the 3rd drew a line down the crest of the Appalachian mountains to stop the colonists and the native Americans from killing each other (colonists weren’t happy)
Before Proclamation of 1763
British facing a ton of problems after the french and Indian war (native Americans and colonists were killing each other)
Stamp act
Tax on every piece of paper the colonists used. Colonists got mad and started attacking tax collectors.
The quartering act
Tax on everything ( new York decided not to vote on vinegar and liquor) British reacted by refusing an assembly request until new york would obey the quartering act.
Townshend acts
Tax placed on certain goods the colonists imported from Britain (popular items are GLASS, PAINT, PAPER, AND TEA)
The Boston massacre
- problems happen in Boston
- government send 4 soldiers ( weren’t allowed to fire )
- march 5th 1770 mob throw ice balls and rocks
- soldiers got scared and opened fire
Tea act
giving the colonies cheaper tea ( less expensive than dutch tea even with tax)
Boston tea party
Sons of liberty dressed up as Indians snuck on the British ships and dumped the tea in the harbor
Intolerable act
punish the colonist for the Boston tea party
(3 laws)
- close Boston harbor until all tea was paid for
- colony of Massachusetts firmly under British control
- British soldiers accused of murder would be tried in England
Lexington and concord
The British marched into Lexington and concord intending to get the hidden weapons from the colonists (first battle of the revolutionary war)
