Chapter 5 - Energy In Biomass Flashcards
Important tip about biomass loss
Energy is never lost it is transferred. The energy may heat the surroundings or be stored in faeces
When do things to decay quicker
Decay is quicker in warm, moist, aerobic conditions
Why is warmth and oxygen needed for the decay
Water is needed to prevent the microorganisms from dying out/to help them absorb the soluble food;
warmth is needed for the enzymes to work efficiently ;
oxygen is needed for aerobic respiration
What does the decay process release
Nutrients and minerals which can be taken up again by plants
What is biomass
Biomass is the dry mass of living material in an organism
Why is it important to recycle organic kitchen and garden waste
It is important to recycle organic material to prevent it going into landfill sites and to reduce levels of methane
