Chapter 5, Electrons And Bonding Flashcards
Name all 4 types of orbital
S,P,D,F
What is the shape of an S orbital and a P orbital?
S is spherical
P is dumbell
How many orbitals does a P orbital have?
3, X,Y,Z
Define an oribal
A region of space where 2 electrons can be found with oppersite spin
Define a sub shell
A group of orbitals that are the same within a shell
Define an ionic bond
Strong electrostatic attraction between oppersitely charged ions
Define a covalent bond
Attraction which causes a shared pair of electrons
Define a Dative covalent bond
When electrons from the shared pair are provided by a donor specie which is short of their oxtect maximum
Give the structures formed by ionic, covalent, metallic bonds
Giant ionic, covalent, metallic lattice
Why does diamond not conduct electricity?
All 4 of the carbon bonds are bonded to another carbon so no mobile carriers are present.
Why does graphite and graphene conduct electricity?
Only 3 of the 4 carbons are bonded to another carbon therefore each carbon has 1 mobile carrier so can conduct. Layers can conduct by allowing movement of mobile carriers
What is the electron configuration
1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d10
What is the electron confirmation of Ni?
1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d8
Why does the 4s subshell fill before 3d?
4s is a lower energy level that 3d
Give the shorthand electron confirmation of Ca
[Ar] 4s2
