Drug
A substance that on entering the body changes the body or its functioning.
Agonist
Mimics or increases the effect of a neurotransmitter.
Antagonist
Reduces the effect of a neurotransmitter.
Agonist treatments
Replace an addicting drug with another drug that has a similar effect.
Ex. Smoking - vaping, nicotine patch, gum.
Heroin - methadone
Antagonist treatment
Involve drugs that block the effects of the addicting drugs.
Ex. Opium- naltrexone
Aversive treatments
Cause a negative reaction when the person takes the drug.
Ex. Alcohol- antibuse (will make you ill)
Anti drug vaccines
Are synthetic molecules that resemble the drug but have been modified to simulate the animal’s immune system to make antibodies that will degrade the drug.
Ex. So far vaccines for nicotine and heroin.
