Chapter 5- Control Of Microbial Growth Flashcards
What kind of moist heat sterilizations are there ?
- Boiling
2. Autoclave
What does boiling do to bacteria ?
Kills vegetative form. Although endoscopes and some viruses are not destroyed quickly.
What is autoclave ?
Autoclave is when a bacteria is steamed under pressure to achieve temperature above boiling point.
Why does autoclave require extra time?
Because when hearing larger materials it requires extra time for the heat it reach the center if solid materials.
What kind of milk pasteurization is used today ?
A. High temperature short time (HTST)
B. Ultra high temperature (UHT)
What is dry heat sterilization ?
Drying heat that kills by oxidation effects
What kinds of dry heat sterilization are there?
- Flaming
- Incineration
- Hot air sterilization in hot air oven
What are the physical methods of microbial control?
Heat, filtration, low temperature, desiccation, osmotic pressure, radiation
