Q

what was the original rational for socialism?

A
  • firms have more power than individuals so they exploit them
    - big companies are all on the same team; exploited workers may find work somewhere else but they are all the same
  • fairness:
    - class system is unfair and hard to get out of. society must be controlled to eliminate the class system
    - Marx predicted machines would replace workers leaving masses unemployed
    - used to justify cost and benefits

Q

modern rational

A

we must socialize individual decisions by state force in order to counter socializing effect

  - cost spill over : external costs
  - externalities: external cost and benefits
  - efficient decision making in society requires that firms pay the cost of their actions
  - another externality is created by national defense
  - efficient assessment of external costs and benefits must be done by those who have knowledge of all facets of the economy and nothing to gain from the regulatory process
