Chapter 5: Behaviour Modification Flashcards
What are the two major classes
Habituation -flooding -desensitization Counter conditioning -classical -operant
What is habituation
Response to a stimulus diminishes over time due to repeated exposure with no adverse or pleasurable experiences
-animal gets used to it
Simple and common form of learning
-teaches animal what not to fear
Divided into flooding and desensitization
What is flooding
Expose to stimulus head on, full force
-hold down to trim nails
Can make them worse and more reactive (sensitized)
-worse for next nail trims
What is desensitization
More useful than flooding
Use less intense stimulus first
What no reaction gradually increase
Works best when paired with counter conditioning
What is counter conditioning
Change response to a stimulus
Or train a different behaviour
Goal is a positive response
Desensitization goal is for neutral response to stimulus
What is classical counter conditioning
Create a different association -emotional and psychologic Change the emotional state -carrier doesn’t not equal fear Pair with desensitization for best results
What is operant counter conditioning
Train a different response to stimulus
Pair with desensitization for best results
Classical conditioning is occurring at the same time
-use positive reinforcement for positive association
-need to address the emotional state
