Bathymetry
is the study of the seafloor topography through mapping.
Isobaths
Variations in depth are known as isobaths or depth contours. Ever since ships have been used in and around harbors, there has been a need to know the depth of water.
Hydrography
which measures features in the ocean as well as the properties of water itself (currents, tides, and waves), has its basis in bathymetry.
String and a lead plumb
Early ocean surveyors used a string and a lead plumb or anything that can be lowered into the water to determine the depth.
Sonar
(sound navigation and ranging) uses pulses of sound to determine the depth of water below a ship.
Satellite altimetry
using radar to measure the distance from space between the height of the sea surface and the orbit of the satellite
