chapter 5 Flashcards
What are the structures and functions of the respiratory system?
In the cells taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide.
What is the difference between breathing& respiration?
Breathing is air coming in and out. respiration is air inside the body.
Describe the pathway of inhalation?
It goes through the nose, pharynx, then trachea, bronchi, lungs and alveoli.
why is it important that the trachea be surrounded by rings of cartilage
so that it does not collapse
what roles do mucus and cilia play in the respiratory system
to stop bad and harmful thing from getting into the lungs
what is the function of the alveoli
to fill with air and give it to the capillaries
how is gas exchanged between the blood and alveoli?
It’s exchanged through the capillaries.
Explain how the diaphragm works.
When inhaling it goes down and hen exhaling it goes up.
Describe the effects of tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine on the respiratory system.
Tar sticks to cilla, clumps it together and cannot trap or sweep mucus up. Nicotine is addictive and carbon monoxide takes the place of oxygen in the red blood cells.
How does bronchitis affect the respiratory system?
It allows a bit of air through and then closes up.
What are the structures and functions of the excretory system?
urine, kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, nephron
How does the excretory system hep maintain homeostasis?
The kidneys get rid of harmful waste.
