Q

Describe early modern policing in the west in Canada.

A

Early policing in Canada was done by the Hudson’s Bay Company, with the approval of the federal government. The trading posts were used as headquarters for early west policing. The North West Mounted Police was established in the west in 1873 and they were later renamed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1920. The NWMP followed a paramilitary style which later was the norm for most police agencies in Canada.

17
Q

There are four policing styles developed by Wilson (1968). Describe the different styles.

A

The social agent: The police are problem solvers who work with community members to solve community problems. Citizens expect the police to protect them from outsiders and yet respond to the citizens’ concerns as well.

The watchman: This style emphasizes public order where the police are tolerant of private matters betNween citizens as well as minor crimes and are unlikely to make an arrest. The police would move people along or separate people involved in altercations.

The law enforcer: This style would have the police enforce all the laws using minimal discretion. The police would investigate all matters, make an arrest, and charge all suspects.

The crime fighter: This style believes the most important aspect of policing is detecting crime and apprehending offenders. The focus is on serious criminals with the belief that there is a “thin blue line” between order and chaos.
