HONCLBRIF
What are atomic elements?
Elements that exist in nature as elements
What’s a molecular compound?
All nonmetal
What’s a ionic compound?
Metal + nonmetal
How do you write ionic formulas? (4 steps)
1) determine charges
2) if they have the same absolute value, they each get one atom.
3) if they are not equal, cross multiply to make the charge neutral.
4) smallest # ratios
How do you name binary compounds using IUPAC?
Name of metal- base name of nonmetal- ide
How do you name compounds when the elements have multiple possible charges?
Show charges with Roman numerals. Use rules from IUPAC
